What Wine Should I Pair With My Pizza?
Yes, wine and pizza pair well together. But, pair the wrong wine with the wrong pizza and it’s likely not going to be a pleasurable experience. To help take out the guesswork, we have put together a few suggested pairings that will complement our pizzas.
Pepperoni, Ricotta & Sausage, or Calabrese
Red: A medium-bodied and acidic wine will complement the spicy and fatty flavors. Chianti and Merlot are great choices.
White: Prosecco will pair well as it will cut through the spiciness of the meat.
Margherita or Italiana
Red: Chianti is made from the Sangiovese grape. The acidity in the tomatoes matches the acidity that is found naturally in Sangiovese.
White: The herbal notes of basil combine well with the floral notes of Pinot Grigio. It is refreshing and will highlight the tomato sauce.
A Rose will also work well to intensify the basil flavor but balance the acidity of the sauce.
Carne Trio or Capricciosa
Red: Cabernet Sauvignon has elevated tannins that will match the fattiness of the meats.
White: Chardonnay has good acidity and tannins to balance the richness of the meat. Sauvignon Blanc is also a nice choice. It is crisp and refreshing with enough acidity to balance the richness of the cheese and meat flavors.
The Forbidden One
Red: Merlot will bring out the sweetness of the pineapple.
White: Riesling will pair well due to the sweetness of the pineapple and the saltiness of the ham.
Buffalina, 6 Formaggi, or the Stella
Red: Pinot Noir has low tannins. It adds flavors of fruit and bright acidity that make it a nice balance for white pizza.
White: Sauvignon Blanc is dry and crisp. It will pair well with a lighter pizza. Chardonnay will bring out the creaminess of cheeses.
Basil Pesto
Red: Malbec pairs well with the pesto’s bold flavors.
White: Sauvignon Blanc has grassy aromas that will complement the aromas of the basil. Pinot Grigio is also a nice choice.
The Angry Goat
Red: Sangue di Giuda is a sweet wine. It contains less tannins and is light on alcohol. Therefore, it can ease the burn.
White: For the same reasons as the suggested red pairing, Moscato will be a great choice.
